‘Rumours’, the new single from Lizzo, is a bold refutation of the haters — a way of staring down the people who have talked shit about the hugely popular rapper and singer, calling time on those who wish her ill.

If you hadn’t heard, Lizzo has had something of a strange last 12 months. While experiencing a meteoric high off the back of her single ‘Juice’, the singer found herself the subject of scurrilous rumours about everything from her dating life to her body. She was gossip catnip, and her every move hit the headlines in one way or the other.

‘Rumours’ is both an answer to such media noise, and a refutation of it. “Last year, I thought I would lose it,” Lizzo sings. “Rеadin’ shit on the internet/My smoothiе cleanse and my diet“.

But she is unbowed and unbroken by such gossip, able to see it in its true context. In the grand scheme of things, such noise is just that: noise. And Lizzo knows it. “Spendin’ all your time tryna break a woman down,” she sings in the pre-chorus. “Realer shit is goin’ on, baby, take a look around/If you thought that I was ratchet with my ass hangin’ out/Just wait until the summer when they let me out the house, bitch.”

In essence, the song is exactly what the culture needs — a serve of realness and honesty the likes of which often gets ironed out by the pop music machine. There’s no half-measures here, or soft words when harder ones could do.

And then there’s the accompanying music video. Depicting Lizzo as an Ancient Goddess, it’s a mix of the old and the new; the iconic and the fresh. And that’s not even to mention the appearance of a very pregnant Cardi B, carrying the song off into the realm of the timeless.

No wonder the clip has the internet melting down.

It truly is Lizzo’s world. We’re just living in it.
