A few days ago, the profile picture on the Powderfinger Facebook page got changed. You might remember something about that, because it sent the internet absolutely wild.

Within hours, media outlets and Powderfinger fans alike began trying to guess what the band were up to. A full-scale tour? A new album? An anniversary celebration of their record Odyssey Number Five?

As it turns out, none of these guesses were quite on the money. This morning, the band have announced that they are in fact getting back together — but for a one night only virtual gig going down on May 23.

Called “One Night Lonely”, the performance will be broadcast on YouTube direct from the bandmembers’ home studios. That’ll undoubtedly give the concert an intimate feeling, one desperately needed in these strange and isolated new times we find ourselves mired in.

G’day Folks, we know we’ve been quiet but we hope this news makes you smile.

Powderfinger are getting back together for…

Is this what the band initially planned for this year? Almost certainly not. But is it a warmly anticipated night of music from one of Australia’s best bands? For sure.

Just to top things off, the band also took the piss of the media furore over the last few days with an amusing short video, a fake phone call between band members.

“Have you heard anything about the band getting back together?” goes a crackly voice. “Apparently someone’s gone and changed the profile picture on our Facebook page and the media is going crazy. I didn’t even know we had a Facebook page.”

Watch the whole thing below, and keep the 23rd of this month totally clear.

We changed our profile picture and look what happens…
