It’s pretty easy to make fun of The OC in retrospect. For half a decade, it nobly tried to teach us how hard life was for insanely rich teenagers, only three of its main characters were in any way likeable — Seth Cohen and each of Sandy Cohen’s eyebrows, obvs — and some of its scenes were so cheesy they inspired their own memes.

Amidst all this, one of the things that it did have going for it was the music. Earlier this month, our writer Sinead Stubbins wrote a love letter about all this for Pitchfork; here, she points out that indie music was in fact a crucial part of The OC that essentially shaped the taste of a generation. Before teens were using the internet to find new music, they were discovering The Killers and Modest Mouse at the Bait Shop, hearing about Death Cab from Seth Cohen, and buying CDs of the show’s soundtrack.

Now, in an attempt to recreate the magic that was Music from The OC, triple j Unearthed has created their own little mixtape of local music that fits the familiar strain of indie pop that stopped you listening to Eiffel 65 and Avril Lavigne all those years ago . It’s pretty damn great.

Here’s the full playlist, so you can check out each band:
