Pass It On: Remember That Time Gough Whitlam Was In An Ad For Leggo’s Pasta Sauce?

Above all, Gough was a man of culcha.

Besides his many other achievements, Gough started the great Australian tradition of Prime Ministers being legends when he appeared in a 2001 ad for Leggo’s pasta sauce and did more to mangle the Italian language than Alta Vista’s Babelfish translator.

The ad was part of a Leggo’s campaign at the time featuring prominent Australians like Shane Warne and Kerri-Anne Kennerley, but Gough’s spot was the best of all. The only comparable post-office achievement by an Australian Head of Government was that time Bob Hawke sculled a beer at the cricket in 2012.

Rest in peace, legend.
