Despite being one of the most oversaturated popstars on the planet, there’s always been something fairly removed about Kanye West.

Sure, the man gives his entire self to his albums, often crafting deeply personal and pained narratives about his life and struggles. We know about his relationship with his mother; his heartbreaks; his recent divorce. But the author of these stories is always Kanye himself, and if there’s anything that being a Kanye fan teaches you, it’s that the man can’t always be trusted to speak plainly. He takes the obfuscated over the direct, the complex over the bare bones.

That’s because he’s constantly tangling with his own mystique. Kanye doesn’t want to be a human being. Kanye wants to be a god. That means there’s a remove about him, a certain distance that has perpetually been held in place between the artist and his audience.

Now, that distance is set to be shortened, with the release of a brand new documentary trilogy titled Jeen-Yuhs.

Dropping over three weeks, the film triology offers an unparalleled insight into the life of one of the most controversial and important acts of our times. As Boss Hunting reports, the documentary has been a long time coming: it’s been in development for almost two decades, and was directed by one of Kanye’s earliest collaborators, a journalist who interviewed him when he was just starting out.

As to the narrative arc of the documentary — that is yet to be discovered. By the looks of the trailer, the series will begin at the beginning, looking at Kanye’s meteoric rise. That makes it an enticing proposition for both newcomers, and those who know the rapper better than anyone. Here’s to hoping it rules.

Jeen-Yuhs is set to drop on Netflix on February 16. Watch the trailer in full right here:
