Everyone’s favourite sad dads, The National, have released a new song that’s perfect for staring out at a stormy ocean and regretting things. It’s also happens to be a cover of the Bob’s Burgers end-credits, because they have layers.

While this collaboration between a beloved comedy animation TV show and a gloomy indie band might seem odd, it’s not without precedence, as this is the third Bob’s Burger themed Thanksgiving song that the National have worked on, following ‘Thanksgiving Song’ and ‘Sailors In Your Mouth’. They’ve also done a Christmas song. Last year they also recorded ‘Bad Stuff Happens In The Bathroom’, where frontman Matt Berninger sang Bob’s part of the song during the episode ‘Glued, Where’s My Bob?’ So I dunno, I guess they’re fans. They also recorded a chilling version of ‘The Rains of Castamere’ for Game of Thrones, but tonally that makes perfect sense. Layers, I tell you.

This year to celebrate Thanksgiving and their love of both Bob and his burgers, The National have covered ‘Give It To Teddy’, which was the end-credit song for a recent episode of the show. Somehow even when singing lyrics like “But is a Gerald Ford bobblehead that doesn’t really bobble really worth your trouble, Teddy?”, Matt Berninger still evokes the image of a woodsman with a dark past taking simple pleasure in a spring blossom. Frankly, it’s perturbing and excellent.

Do yourself a favour and be thankful for the musical equivalent of unlikely animal companions, and listen to ‘Give It To Teddy’.

The National released their latest album Sleep Well Beast earlier this year.
