ABC’s immensely popular music show The Sound returned last week for its second season, raking in stars like Kylie Minogue, Midnight Oil, The Rubens, and Ruel.

Last night the show celebrated the beginning of NAIDOC Week, and featured legends like Archie Roach, Christine Anu, Briggs, Busby Marou, Tasman Keith, and more. Sporting icon Cathy Freeman even showed up to help out Anu and regular Jane Gazzo with the hosting duties.

It was a packed episode, with Midnight Oil performing ‘Change The Date’ from their just-released album The Makarrata Project. The track, a collaboration with Dan Sultan, also features an unreleased vocal recording from Gurrumul. Missy Higgins took over an empty Melbourne CBD to play through her new single ‘When The Machine Starts’.

The high point was the final performance — a tribute to the great Warumpi Band’s ‘My Island Home’. Christine Anu, who made the song a chart hit with her cover back in 1995, was joined by Ngaiire, Electric Fields’ Zaachariah Fielding, and Emma Donovan from their respective homes for a gorgeous rendition.
