Even by the low standard that he has set for himself, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer has not been having a good week.

Trump’s chief mouthpiece, whose previous hits include tweeting his own password, lying about the President’s bathrobe, and repeatedly referring to Malcolm Turnbull as “Prime Minister Trumble”, Spicer has been in hot water since Wednesday, when he mistakenly said that Hitler never used chemical weapons against his own people in WWII. It was not a good look.

Fortunately, while Spicer’s grasp of history might be a little on the flimsy side, the same can’t be said of his lookalike Melissa McCarthy. After a couple of months away, the comedian was back on Saturday Night Live this week to reprise her role as the beleaguered White House spokesman – bald cap, flop sweat, Easter bunny suit and all.

“Everybody shut up so I can apologise,” began McCarthy.  “Yes, you all got your wish this week, didn’t you? Spicy finally made a mistake.”

“Everybody freaked,” she complained of the reaction to Spicer’s gaffe. “They were all like ‘boohoo, what about the Holocaust centres?’ And yeah, I know they’re not really called ‘Holocaust centres’, duh! I know that. I clearly meant to say ‘concentration clubs’.”

“I’d like you also to know that I am sensitive to the fact that they were sent there on trains,” she added. “But hey, at least they didn’t have to fly United, am I right?”
