Don’t be jealous but Mean Girls is the greatest movie of all time — we can’t help if it’s popular. And as we all know, the only way to improve on perfection is to make it a musical, which has totally happened. And it looks amazing.

Mean Girls creator Tina Fey returned to write the musical, which is important because all the film’s iconic humour came from her amazing brain. Also on board is director/choreographer Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon),  Legally Blonde: The Musical lyricist Nell Benjamin, and Tina Fey’s husband Jeff Richmond, a composer for 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. What a dream team.

While the musical is said to have all the iconic moments and quotes (“she doesn’t even go here”, “I’m a mouse, duh” and “you go, Glen Coco” to name a few) it has been updated to reflect modern-day issues. The addition of mobile phones and the internet in a story about teenage bullying is pretty crucial.

In an interview with USA Today, star of the musical Erika Henningsen, who plays the role of Cady Heron, explains that the feminist theme of the story has been slightly updated too.

“There’s a (new) wonderful scene in the musical where Regina tells Cady, ‘You don’t have to apologise for being a badass. You have to apologise when you tear somebody else down because of it. But you should never apologise for your worth and your strength’, and that’s sort of been the new development of Tina’s message, of the show’s message for today.”

While all of us over here in Australia can only hope and pray for the musical to reach our shores, the first reviews are coming in for its Broadway season and they seem absolutely grool.
