"Don't be sad. Packin' it up is just a part of life."

Today was Matt Okine and Alex Dyson’s last breakfast shift on triple j before handing the reins to new hosts Ben Harvey and Liam Stapleton and yeah, they really made the most of the opportunity.

“First off, gotta thank you ‘cos it’s your work and we’re fans too,” Okine said. “We’re just dumb guys in this dark room talking dumb shit dropping dank tunes. Every phone call, every text sent, every head cropped on our Facebook’s like ‘I love you’, yeah right.”

Except he didn’t so much say that as rap it in a huge “pack ‘er up” medley made with Unearthed act Goosebumpz and some backup vocals from Alex Dyson.

“Don’t be sad,” Dyson crooned while wearing sunnies at the keyboard. “Packin’ it up’s just a part of life.”

It’s deeply weird and also kind of perfect.

Things got even more intense when the hosts tried their hand at the weekly Like A Version with the help of KLP, Elizabeth Rose, Art vs Science, Just a Gent, and Tim Commandeur. No spoilers. I think it’s best you just watch it and see.

There’s a whole lot of love pouring in for both Okine and Dyson from triple j workmates and fans (with some even calling for Okine to take up a rap career), and it’s clear new hosts Ben and Liam have big shoes to fill.

Dyson, who has been at the station since he was just 18 years old, delivered the final sign-off with a huge speech about tune rags set to inspirational backing music. “Life is like a tune rag… and we’re damn proud that you’ve let us be a part of your tune rag.”

“Live proud, rave hard, and always, and I mean always listen to triple j.”
