Netflix’s star-studded action-comedy Spenser Confidential has a very simple premise: what if Mark Wahlberg was a massive badass?

As the titular Spenser, Wahlberg spends the two minutes of the trailer beating up an assortment of baddies, including but not limited to Post Malone as a snarling prison inmate, and a gang member with a massive, fuck-off machete.

Less clear is what the plot actually is. Based on the Spenser series of books and the popular ’80s TV series Spenser: For Hire, the film is ostensibly about a man getting his life on track after spending a number of years on the inside. But what it’s actually about is ass-kickings, and lots of them, with Mark Wahlberg showing off his otherworldly physique in a series of increasingly ludicrous brawls.

Along the way, he hangs out with Marc Maron (of WTF podcast and Glow), and shoots off a series of wisecracks with his sidekick, played by the effortlessly charming Winston Duke (he of Black Panther and Us fame.)

It’s a perfect example of the enjoyably cheesy entertainment that Netflix have been doubling down on recently, what with the release of the masterful 6 Underground late last year. And it’s exactly the kind of content that audiences are flocking to in this deeply cursed world: something that you can settle into, and simply and uncomplicatedly enjoy.
