The Last of Us Part II is an extremely upsetting game.

Everybody knows this now. The grimness of the story, and the sheer extent of unpleasant things you have to do in order to progress it, was made clear by literally ever bit of advance marketing. I mean, look at the front cover of the game: the pale, haunted face of Ellie, looking like she’s having the worst time imaginable.

As a result, even the most diverting and minor side missions have become suffused with tragedy. Just look at Ellie’s guitar playing.

See, throughout the game, Ellie can pick up acoustic guitars, settle down in the abandoned runs that is her home, and start twanging away. The guitar-playing is surprisingly adept and complicated, meaning that players can teach Ellie to carry whichever tune they like.

And, unsurprisingly, everyone’s decided that the songs she should play need to be very, very sad.

Here then is a video of the character mournfully playing Johnny Cash’s ‘Hurt’:

Here she is taking on ‘Nothing Else Matters’:

Here she is putting her stamp on ‘Hotel California’:

Oh, and just to inject some — grim — fun into the proceedings, here she is playing a version of the song that accompanies the coffin dancer meme:

And I tell ya what, if you reckon that these eerie guitar covers are as haunting as The Last Of Us Part II gets, then are you in for a shock when you play the game.
