Few popstars have ever made the transition to acting quite as successfully as Lady Gaga.

Sure, David Bowie did it back in the seventies, delivering a star-making turn in The Man Who Fell To Earth. But for every Bowie, there’s a failed crossover attempt by one of the biggest musicians on the planet, vanity projects that don’t hold up under critical or commercial scrutiny.

Then there’s Gaga. Her turn in A Star Is Born, the exemplary melodrama directed by Bradley Cooper, won her widespread acclaim, not to mention an Oscar nomination. In one fell swoop, the singer announced that she was to be taken seriously as a performer, showcasing a dynamic range and silencing the haters once and for all.

Now she’s following up her role in A Star Is Born with another exuberant performance in House Of Gucci, the new overcranked biopic from acclaimed director Ridley “Alien” Scott.

For the record, the film looks absolutely batshit. Following the exploits family business of the title, the film is a lavish look at wealth, distress, trauma and murder.

Then there’s the cast. Lady Gaga might be the one drawing all the headlines, but the film is absolutely stuffed with supporting turns from some of the biggest stars in the world, from Adam Driver to Al Pacino to Jared Leto.

The new trailer, which dropped this week, showcases each of these performers, many of them buried under deliciously over-the-top mounds of make-up. I mean, Leto in particular is actively unrecognisable, covered in swathes of latex and burbling his way through ridiculous, quip-heavy dialogue.

In essence, the film looks like exactly what the doctor ordered, a ridiculous serve of Sirkian silliness, directed by a classicist with an eye for the strange and the silly. Watch the trailer in full here:
