Keanu Reeves is the internet’s hero for a reason.

The man has spent his entire career being one of the most humble, down-to-Earth celebrities that we have in our collective cultural repertoire. He is utterly without pretension, committed always to making himself heard and understood. It suits him that “woah” is his catchphrase; it speaks to his unassuming curiosity, a kind of open-hearted way of dealing with the world.

Which is why it’s such a joy that the man is in the middle of a press tour, promoting the fourth iteration of The Matrix franchise, Resurrections. Any time that we get the man in the public eye is a time to be cherished. And Reeves hasn’t disappointed so far.

Need proof? Then take his excellent, straight to the point shut down of NFTs.

If you’ve been living under a rock, then NFTs — which stands for non-fungible tokens — are a kind of internet commodity, a digital form of art. Buyers “own” their NFTs, with that ownership being listed as part of internet blockchains. The biggest NFT producers make millions from the sale of their artworks, and the form is only booming. Indeed, it’s been taken up from everyone from video game companies, which are offering in-game NFTs, to film studios: even The Matrix is being promoted in the form of NFTs.

But that didn’t stop Keanu Reeves from pointing out the most glaring issue with the artform; that anyone can right click on an image, and save their own copy of it. How much do you really own an object if all it takes is some random on the internet to save a copy of it themselves?

I mean, just watch this video of Reeves, giggling as he shuts down the entire concept of the tokens.

Truly the man is one of the best to ever do it. Long may he be an internet god.
