For many a year, people have observed Katy Perry looks like Zooey Deschanel and turns out Katy Perry (and her aliens) have too. In her ‘Not the End of The World’ music video, some aliens abduct Zooey Deschanel because they mistake her for Katy.

So, Zooey pretending to be Katy must prevent the Earth’s self-destruction, which the aliens have graciously decided to save Katy from. Zooey does what any reasonable person would do in this situation; she saves the earth and performs a full concert as Katy for said aliens.

The shenanigans unfold after Katy walks past Zooey in the same park and the aliens quite literally get their wires crossed. Even when Zooey is teleported to the ship, and tries to explain to the fanatical horde, she is not the woman they worship, her claims fall in unlistening blue ears.

It is then Zooey realises that they have abducted her to save her from the self-destruction of Earth. Zooey then knows what she must do, assume Katy’s identity to stop the aliens destroying the Earth. Which she succeeds in doing by – let me check my notes here – yes, disconnecting the whole earth from the internet.

Zooey Deschanel, then performs a concert in which she cosplays in an epic space-dress as Katy for the aliens. The world is saved, the aliens are satisfied, and its a happy strange ending.

The two women’s looks have been compared and memed for well over a decade. Many have even joked that the pair were secretly sisters or clones made by the Hollywood machine.

I’m sure the truth is out there somewhere, but for now, let us bask in this, the most important kind of pop-culture moments… the ones where celebrities embrace the memes made about themselves in wholesome creative ways.

‘Not the End of the World’ is the latest single from Perry’s sixth studio album, Smile, and is streaming now.
