Whoa, Karl Stefanovic Was Just Axed From Channel Nine’s ‘Today’ Show

It’s an end-of-year Stefanovic clearance sale over at Channel 9, with news coming through today that Australia’s sometimes loveable, often problematic uncle Karl Stefanovic has been axed from Nine’s marquee breakfast show Today.

The surprise announcement comes off the back of yesterday’s news that Karl’s brother Peter Stefanovic was also departing Channel Nine, albeit in a more mutual fashion, with Karl’s punting allegedly at Nine’s sole discretion.

It’s been a rocky year in public life for both Stefanovics, with tabloids absolutely eating up the endless goss surrounding wives, ex-wives, destination weddings and colleagiate beef. More specifically many are pointing to the embarrassingly named Ubergate saga back in March as the main trigger for their eventual departures. That scandal saw Karl and Peter overheard by an Uber driver ripping into the likes of fellow Nine employee Richard Wilkins and new Today presenter Georgie Gardner.

The joint statement from Nine and Stefo reads, “Nine and Karl Stefanovic have agreed it is time for him to step off the Today show. Karl remains on contract with the network and will continue to host (his other show) This Time Next Year.”

So there you go, looks like he’ll still be hanging around Nine in some capacity for at least awhile. After that? Well, people on Twitter have some thoughts:
