Notorious method actor Jared Leto has come under fire for his performance as the titular vampire in Morbius, Sony Pictures’ take on the Marvel Universe which premiered this week to some pretty bad reviews.

The film fleshes out the origin story of Spiderman’s supernatural nemesis and has so far received a 19 percent average on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics calling it “the single most anemic Marvel movie ever made” and “boring“.

Leto plays Dr Michael Morbius, a doctor who accidentally becomes a blood-sucking creature of the night after trying to synthesise a cure for his rare blood disease.

Leto’s performance marks his second attempt at portraying a superhero villain, after tackling the Joker in DC Comic’s Suicide Squad back in 2016. His offstage antics during the production of the movie ended up being more controversial than his actual performance of the Joker, and included dumping a dead pig in his fellow cast members’ dressing room and gifting Margot Robbie a live rat.

Similarly, Morbius director Daniel Espinosa told Variety that he was “scared” for Leto’s health, due to the intensity of his method acting during production, and revealed that he “sensed the crew backed off” during a scene involving the actor breaking glass.

Meanwhile, the internet has been quick to drag Leto’s presence in both Marvel and DC’s worst comic book adaptations.

While the film is expected to make at least $33 million at the box office over the weekend, people have joked about viewing the movie in close to empty cinemas.

Leto recently received praise for playing a vampiric ghoul of the corporate variety, the disgraced WeWork founder Adam Neumann in the Apple Tv original series WeCrashed.
