In this, our darkest hour of need, a hero has emerged: Isabelle from Animal Crossing.

Yep, the immaculately dressed young hero of the biggest game of the year has become something of an emotional anchor over the last few weeks. While we’ve all been forced into our homes, isolated from friends and family, Isabelle — queer hero that she is — has been there for us, smiling her gentle smile and doling out kindly life advice.

The Animal Crossing mainstay plays a particularly important part in this new instalment. She pops up a few hours into the game, arriving to assist with the running of the community centre. It’s her you have to speak to when you have a “problem” with another resident of your island, or when you want to change your national flag or anthem.

Indeed, it’s that last role that has led to a wonderful new meme, as players around the world are uniting and forcing Isabelle to sing some wild, wild tunes.

See, when changing your anthem, Isabelle sings the new tune back to you for confirmation. That’s a perfect exploit for anybody who wants to get the character to sing everything from ‘Buddy Holly’ by Weezer to ‘Love Scenario’ by South Korean chart-topping group iKon.

Oh, and that’s not to ignore perhaps Isabelle’s greatest moment — the time someone forced her to sing the Russian national anthem. And she said it sounded familiar.

Isabelle’s a socialist? Probably shouldn’t be surprised — after all, she is the natural ying to the capitalistic yang of that capitalistic bastard Tom Nook.
