Even The Offspring Don’t Want You To Vote For ‘Pretty Fly’ In The ’98 Hottest 100

And they're backing an Australian classic instead.

With voting closing midday AEDT, the clock’s ticking on your chance to re-vote for the controversial #1 spot of 1998’s Hottest 100 — but before you do, let it be known that even The Offspring don’t think their song ‘Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)’ should have taken out the top spot.

Since it’s one of the most contentious winners of triple j’s Hottest 100, Double J decided to reopen the votes last week. You can pick your personal #1 from the top 100, and they’ll work out the new top 10 from there.

Looks like voters are pretty split as to uphold the #1 spot, or change history: when we posted our original news story, a heap of you responded with passionate support of ‘Pretty Fly’.

In many ways, it is the perfect ’98 winner, a sonic summation of where we were at, for better or worse. Having said that, it turns out even The Offspring don’t think they should have taken out top honours.

Over on Facebook, the band shared Double J’s poll telling people ‘Pretty Fly’ winning was a “historical error”.

“We totally get it,” they wrote. “Our song may have been played a time or two too many. So let’s fix this historical error by voting for The Living End’s ‘Save The Day’ as the #1 song of 1998. They had 3 songs in the top 20 that year. They earned it!”

Will this sway voters? Considering the top comment is someone doubling down on voting for ‘Pretty Fly’, we’re not so sure. The internet does hate being told what to do.

We’ll find out when the revised top 10 plays on Double J’s Mornings with Zan Rowe this Wednesday from 9am. You’ve got until Midday today AEDT to vote — and before you do, revisit The Offspring’s pick below.
