Cringe comedian Nathan Fielder’s new show presents a very contemporary Faustian bargain — what if you could practice a complex social interaction, like a break-up or a challenging conversation with a colleague, to the point where your response was perfect?

Each episode of Fielder’s new HBO show The Rehearsal focuses on Fielder’s elaborate attempts to solve a new guest’s awkward social dilemma — with the latest episode focusing on one woman’s hesitancy about having a baby. To help Angela, the Christian seeking to become a parent, Fielder decides to compress the experience of motherhood into just two months, employing a plethora of child actors that are secretly swapped out every few hours to give the impression of aging (while also complying with the state’s child labour laws).

But the social experiment derails after Fielder tries to find a partner for the aspiring mother, landing on the devout Christian and numerology apostle Robbin Stone. After agreeing to join the social experiment, Fielder tags along as Robbin prepares to pick some things up from his house, giving the audience a glimpse of what a hot mess he is in the process.

There are almost too many red flags to count. For some reason, Robbin has three mattresses stacked up in his bedroom. After incessantly retelling how he crashed a Scion tC at 100mph, he reveals that he doesn’t own a license plate for his car — believing them to be “optional”. Noticing a bong packed among his belongings destined for the new house, Robbin even shows Fielder how to rip a cone. Worse still, despite Angela’s earlier insistence on celibacy before marriage, Robbin reveals himself to be very, very horny — revealing a desire to sleep with Angela ASAP.

Sadly, Robbin doesn’t last long as a father. Put off by the constant screaming of a mechanical baby constructed by Fielder (again, purely to comply with the state’s child labour laws), our Scion tC crashing bachelor sneaks off in the middle of the night, never to be seen again.

Speaking to journalists in real life, Robbin confirmed that he felt pretty annoyed about how he was depicted on the show.

“I think they really, like, changed my personality,” Robbin told Motherboard, adding that he has since become completely sober. “The portrayal is just completely aimed at making me look bad.”

He also finally revealed exactly how he crashed his Scion tC, telling Motherboard that the near-death experience was a result of an illegal street race that transpired after a morning of day-drinking.

“I end up losing control at 100, going back and forth trying to correct as I’m fishtailing,” Robbin said. “Then just completely lose it and smack into the sidewalk.”

Instead of blaming the influence of marijuana or alcohol on the crash, Robbin chalked the accident up to a mechanical failure, saying “my front right tie rod was bad, which controls steering.”

Curiously, Robbin also revealed that he and Angela still talk, and believes they might still end up together one day.

“We feel that we’re meant to be together,” he told Motherboard.
