The year was 2005. George W. Bush was still holding onto the Presidency, everyone had tricked themselves into thinking Mario’s ‘Let Me Love You’ was cool, and a little show called Gossip Girl had just hit the airwaves.

It didn’t take long for the series to take off, and by the time its first four episodes had aired, Gossip Girl had been absorbed into the zeitgeist. Suddenly, ‘Chuck Bass’ was shorthand for a particular kind of man; an amoral, yet irritatingly charming, huckster and womaniser. Even the show’s visual style changed the way that television looked — suddenly, soap operas had to be big, and loud, and brash.

Indeed, in the years since it went off the air, a bevy of shows have tried (and failed) to capture that original Gossip Girl magic.

That is, until now. Yep, the remake/reboot machine has fixed its glassy eyes upon the show that defined the early noughties: a Gossip Girl reboot is coming our way.

Not much is known about the fresh spin on the formula, other than it’ll star a whole new cast, and will premiere on HBO Max, according to the folks at IndieWire.

Even the official synopsis is distinctly vague. “Eight years after the original website went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl,” it reads. “The prestige series will address just how much social media—and the landscape of New York itself—has changed in the intervening years.”

Sounds intriguing. Let’s just hope HBO sticks the landing.
