Gang of Youths, one of the most beloved bands in Australia, are teasing something big.

Momentum has been quietly building over on the group’s socials these last few weeks. First, their Instagram went black, with all the posts pulled. Then, the band updated their cover image and profile picture over on Facebook, surely one of the most distinct signs in modern music that a musician is planning something.

And now the band have joined TikTok to share an enigmatic clip, teasing something called ‘The Angel of 8th Ave’.

The clip is very brief, depicting a young man standing before a boxing bag, squaring up. It doesn’t even have a release date slapped onto it — just that mysterious title.

As one would expect, the news has sent Gang of Youths superfans into overdrive, with social media lighting up with anticipation.

Particularly active have been Gang of Youths appreciation groups on Facebook, where speculation has run enjoyable rampant. “New music at midnight or we riot,” wrote one user. “The plot thickens,” wrote another. “STAY CALM, I REPEAT STAY CALM,” read one particularly endearing reaction.

Others pointed out that there is already a song by the name of ‘Angel of Eighth Avenue’, released by Mott the Hoople back in the ’70s. “I really think this is a cover of the Mott the Hoople song,” wrote one user. “A cover for our first track? Interesting.”

Guess we’ll all just have to hang tight and wait for more news as it comes in. If it indeed is new music — which we’re almost certain it will be — it will be the first new music since the band’s acclaimed 2017 album Go Farther In Lightness, which bagged them a heap of ARIA Awards saw them headline festivals around the country.
