Of all the truly bonkers moments in Netflix’s Fyre Festival doco Fyrethe one that stood head and shoulders above the rest concerned event producer Andy King, and a fateful shipment of Evian water.

The festival’s supply of Evian water — which would be the only drinkable water on the site, as there was no infrastructure for potable water — was being held in customs by the Bahamian authorities. They would release it for US $175,000 in cash, which organiser Billy McFarland simply did not have. So he asked King for a favour.

“Billy called and said, ‘Andy, we need you to take one big thing for the team.,” King recalled. “And I said, ‘Oh my gosh, I’ve been taking something for the team every day.’

“He said, ‘Well, you’re our wonderful gay leader and we need you to go down, will you suck dick to fix this water problem?’ And I said, ‘Billy, what?’ And he said, ‘Andy, if you will go down and suck Cunningham’s dick, who is the head of customs, and get him to clear all of the containers with water, you will save this festival.’”

Wilder still, King was all ready to do it — he went home, gargled with mouthwash, and dutifully took himself off to see officials at customs. Thankfully, authorities released the water on the condition they were paid as soon as the money was available.

The story perfectly encapsulated the complete clusterfuck that was Fyre Festival, and now Australian audiences will have the opportunity to hear from King himself when he lands at Brisbane’s BIGSOUND music conference in September. In ‘Fyreside chat with Andy King’, he’ll delve into his decades-long career in the music festival industry, as well as recount the rollercoaster that was the event that made him famous.
