The rumour of a Friends reunion special has floated around the internet for at least a decade. And for a while, it looked like it might never happen.

After all, we’re definitely living in the age of reboots — every other popular America show under the sun has received some kind of re-imagining, from Will & Grace to Full(erHouse. Nostalgia is the most prized cultural currency of the day, and in a media landscape overstuffed with streaming platforms trying to hog the attention for themselves, reviving a beloved older property is the best way to go.

So the fact that the Friends reunion hadn’t happened, in a time when people wanted it more than ever, seemed like proof that it’d never go down.

That is, until this morning, when six of the show’s original cast members took to their Instagram accounts at exactly the same time, and published an identical two word message: it’s happening.

There’s very little that we know at this stage other than, ‘it’s happening.’ At this stage, there’s no script or title. Sources speculate that the show will drop on HBO Max along with the entirety of the Friends back catalogue, presumably mid-next year.

Understandably, the internet has gone ballistic in the hours since the announcement, with feverish speculation becoming the name of the game. Will the revival just be one special, or a whole series? Where will it stream in Australia, given that it’s going to HBO Max in the States? Will it be as funny as it once was, given all the years that have passed?

Nobody knows. All anybody knows is they’re amped.

Truly a blessed day.
