The explosive Framing Britney Spears documentary finally has an Australian premiere date, with Channel Nine announcing it will screen the film next week.

As per NME and TV Tonight, the documentary will air on Channel Nine on Tuesday March 2 at 9pm — it was previously premiered in the US on February 5 and in the UK on February 16.

The documentary presents a chronological examination of Britney Spears’ rise to fame, the appalling treatment of her by the media, her 2007 breakdown and the resulting conservatorship she was placed under. It also explores the #FreeBritney movement, and her tense relationship with her father — who until recently, was her sole conservator.

Britney’s father Jamie Spears has been in control of her assets and career since 2008, when he was installed as her legal guardian due to concerns about the singer’s mental health. In 2016, the New York Times described Britney’s life under the conservatorship as being highly controlled.  “Her most mundane purchases, from a drink at Starbucks to a song on iTunes, are tracked in court documents as part of the plan to safeguard the great fortune she has earned but does not ultimately control,” they wrote.

The film has prompted outrage and concern from fans, and sparked a fresh wave of criticism directed at the singer’s ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake — who recently apologised for his treatment of Spears and for his inaction over the Janet Jackson Super Bowl scandal.

As contributor Kish Lal wrote in her review for Music Junkee, the doco doesn’t necessarily present any new information, but it ultimately reveals “a harrowing picture of years of senseless cruelty endured by one woman”.
