Across the world, Friedman economists and business owners are playing death’s advocate and arguing that yes, profits do come before people, effectively shifting our conversation over how to best contain COVID-19 into “should we let people die so the economy doesn’t suffer?”.

The Feed has parodied these “balanced debates” by including a third, more moderate voice on the panel, Vath’tollor, the eater of souls, dream of man, and scourge of the nine known worlds.

In a spoof of commentary shows like ABC’s The Drum, the sketch is set on a show called ‘Mayhaps?’, and sees Vath’tollor debate whether the economy comes before lives alongside a doctor and economist.

If you’ve been tuning into these pointless debates, you’ll hear some familiar arguments from economist Dan Dadaine, including that Australia should follow Sweden’s no-lockdown example and only face a “moderate” 6,000+ deaths. And while Vath’tollor is keen to eat all souls, even they think Dan’s off the deep end.

“I mean, the Swedish economy isn’t exactly thriving, is it?”, says Vath’tollor, before debunking the idea that Sweden’s economy is any better off for having the 7th highest per-capita death-rate in the world.
