Dune is one of the most sprawling, bizarre works of science fiction written in the last 70 years. Which might explain why it’s had such a tortured journey to the screen.

The most famous adaptation came at the hands of David Lynch, he of Mulholland Drive and Blue Velvet fame. Lynch’s version has been reappraised recently (it’s good, don’t @ me), but was a massive box office flop at the time, almost spinning the auteur’s whole career out of control.

Since then, Dune-heads have had to put up with TV miniseries of varying quality, but no big-budget version of the book. That is, until now.

Denis Villeneuve himself, the director who against the odds delivered an excellent sequel to Blade Runner, has adapted the first half of the book into a brooding epic starring pretty much every beloved actor on the planet.

Timothee Chalamet is set to star as Paul, the young hero who must learn how to wrangle giant worms (it’s complicated) and preserve his family’s stranglehold on a valuable spice known as melange (that’s also complicated.) Elsewhere in the cast, you’ve got Oscar Isaac, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Charlotte Rampling and Jason Momoa, to mention genuinely only a few.

The trailer, which dropped this morning, does a good job of explaining the plot for those who might not be familiar with the novel. And it features a giant sandworm. So literally who could complain?

Dune is tentatively due to be released in mid-December.
