Musicians make all kinds of promises. Remember when Sufjan Stevens said that he’d record an album for each of the American states? Or when Matt Healy of the 1975 said he’d send nudes to anyone who could prove they’d voted Labor? Well, now Doja Cat has joined that illustrious list.

The musician has become something of a viral star over the last two years or so. First emerging onto the scene back in 2018 with a viral video titled ‘Mooo!’, Doja Cat — real name Amalaratna Zandile Dlamini — has become a hit with the TikTok generation. Her song ‘Say So’ — a co-write with Dr. Luke — is a massive hit on that social media platform, scoring countless short, humorous clips.

Indeed, memes are central to Dlamini’s entire brand. She’s extremely funny in interviews and clips posted to social media, whether she’s reciting lyrics while dressed in a suit of armour or not knowing who Timothée Chalamet is.

So perhaps it’s unsurprising that Dlamini’s recent promise that she’d “show boobs” if her song ‘Say So’ hit the number one spot on the American charts turned out to be something of a prank itself.

See, back on May 6, the singer promised that if the remix of her biggest hit went number one, she’d “show you guys my boobs really hard.” It’s unlikely that such a promise actually moved the needle at all — the song was already on an upwards trajectory before boobs came into the picture.

But still, when the day came that the song hit number one, fans were ready to receive their promised boobs.

Only, they never came. Instead, Dlamini took to Instagram video to explain that it had all been an elaborate ploy, and that she had no intention of spreading nudes in the first place.

“You got fucking played,” the singer said in a live video. “Look at yourself.”

Needless to say, before too long, the internet was awash with memes poking fun at those led astray by the broken promise.

Just goes to show: never believe what you see on the internet.
