The X-Men cinematic universe is getting rebooted later this year when Disney takes the reins of the franchise from Fox — which is probably a pretty good explanation for the “we don’t know what the fuck we’re doing” vibe going on in the trailer for Dark Phoenix.

Dark Phoenix has what could best be described as a “troubled” production history. Based on one of the most famous storylines of the original X-Men comics, it sees Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) infected by a strange force during a mission deep in the empty void of space, one that turns her from superpowered goodie to tortured superpowered baddie.

Adapting the comic series to the big screen hasn’t been easy. Actors have dropped in and out of the project (Angelina Jolie was once set to take on the role as the villain, Nova, before getting replaced by Jessica Chastain), and the film was in post-production for an entire year before getting its release date pushed back a massive ten months to accommodate reshoots — rarely the sign of a healthy production.

Anyway, the trailer’s here, and you should probably watch it before we talk further — although be warned, for some reason it includes a massive spoiler, so if you don’t want to see a beloved character get completely murdered, skip it.

So yeah, probably the biggest thing to discuss is that spoiler, right near the front of the trailer — looks like ole mate Mystique, played by Jennifer Lawrence (who hasn’t looked interested in the series in about six years) is gonna get smooshed by the evil Dark Phoenix, and presumably pretty early on in the movie.

To be honest, I can kinda see why they decided to reveal such a massive plot point in the trailer: looks like Dark Phoenix doesn’t have a whole else going on for it. I mean, there’s lots of CGI explosions, and James McAvoy, playing Professor X, looks suitably concerned, but on the whole this looks like it’s going to be one bizarre finale for Fox’s X-men franchise.

Guess we’ll find out when it hits Australian cinemas this June 6.
