Community’s Donald Glover (Troy from seasons one through five) is in Australia this week, on a national tour for Listen Out festival as hip hop act Childish Gambino. But it hasn’t been going so well: after well-received slots at the Melbourne and Perth iteration of the festival, he played a sideshow at the Cambridge Hotel in Newcastle last night which according to reports saw him booed off the stage.

Advertised as a live show, 40 minutes of the gig involved Glover hiding in the back corner of the stage playing tracks from his laptop, as his entourage/hype crew fronted the crowd; according to reports, Glover broke his silence only towards the end of the set for a brief freestyle performance.

“As his crew left the stage, the crowd chanted obscenities and heckled as he performed a solo falsetto song and left the stage,” reports The Newcastle Herald. “The rapper appeared visibly shocked at the crowd response, which included obscenities and insults aimed at him traced in perspiration on the venue’s glass wall.”

He’ll be hoping that some of those fans were won back this morning, after his performance of Tamia’s 1998 hit ‘So Into You’ aired on triple j as part of ‘Like A Version’.
