Actor Channing Tatum has severed ties with The Weinstein Company in the wake of the ongoing Harvey Weinstein sex abuse scandal.

Tatum was preparing to direct his first feature film — an adaptation of the Matthew Quick acclaimed novel Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock — with the backing of the studio. But on Wednesday he announced he and his collaborator Reid Carolin were removing themselves from the project in solidarity with Weinstein’s alleged victims.

“The brave women who had the courage to stand up and speak the truth about Harvey Weinstein are true heroes to us,” wrote the pair in a joint statement shared via Tatum’s Instagram account. “They are lifting the heavy bricks to build the equitable world we all deserve to live in.”

In announcing their decision, Tatum and Carolin noted that Quick’s book deals with themes of sexual abuse.

“While we will no longer develop [the novel] or anything else that is property of TWC, we are reminded of its powerful message of healing in the wake of tragedy,” the pair wrote.

“The truth is out,” they added. “Let’s finish what our incredible colleagues started and eliminate abuse from our creative culture once and for all.”

Harvey Weinstein has been accused of sexual harassment and assault by more than 40 women, although he has denied any charges of non-consensual sex. His estranged brother and business partner Bob Weinstein was also recently accused of sexual harassment by a showrunner on The Mist, an allegation which he has also denied.
