Kate Bush, arguably one of the most popular musicians in the world right now, has praised Brisbane’s beloved Pub Choir for their rendition of her hit track ‘Running Up That Hill’.

The 1985 track by the English songstress was thrust back into the minds (and playlists) of the world earlier this year, thanks to its inclusion in the soundtrack of the fourth season of Stranger Things. And, as you’d expect, this means Kate Bush is now a rather busy woman.

But somehow, Bush still found time to send a personal email to the Brisbane Pub Choir thanking them for their performance.

“Dear Brisbane Pub Choir,” the message read. “I’ve been so busy that I’ve only just had the chance to watch you all singing RUTH. It’s utterly, utterly wonderful! I love it so much! Thank you everyone. You sing it really beautifully. I’m incredibly touched by your warmth and all your smiling faces. Thank you! With lots of love, Kate.”

For those unfamiliar with the group, Brisbane Pub Choir operates on the notion that everyone can sing — an ethos that is now backed by Bush herself, who is more than qualified to be the judge of that.

The group had to send in a licensing request for the rights to perform the song, and didn’t have high hopes — given its wild success in recent months. But just days before the show, she gave permission.

“Even that was a massive deal, the idea that she approved,” Brisbane Pub Choir founder and director Astrid Jorgensen told The Guardian.

But not in Jorgensen’s wild dreams could she imagine Bush actually hearing their cover — or responding to it. “My manager called me and said, you’ve got to get home, Kate Bush has emailed. I ran straight back – I was literally running up that hill,” said Jorgensen.

Brisbane Pub Choir has amassed nearly 50,000 YouTube subscribers for their iconic covers, which — warning — will probably inspire you to belt out a banger with the help of some liquid courage next time you’re at the pub. Junkee does not guarantee your drunk mates at the pub will sound this good.

Popular covers include The Backstreet Boys ‘I Want It That Way’ and David Bowie’s ‘Heroes’, both of which sound absolutely phenomenal with a choir of hundreds.

Their recent cover of ‘Running Up That Hill’ has already amassed over 20,000 views in just 10 days, at least one of which comes from the artist herself.
