The unstoppable powerhouse that is Marvel’s Black Panther has officially become the third-biggest movie in US box office history, sailing right past the previously unsinkable Titanic.

Ryan Coogler’s much beloved superhero movie is now sitting on the bronze medal podium behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936.7 million) and Avatar ($760.5 million).

Black Panther has come in swinging with an estimated $659.2 million in US domestic ticket sales after Friday night, which isn’t really a surprise after smashing box office records in its opening weekend.

Globally, Black Panther has grossed $1.29 billion, ranking in the top ten titles of all time. It looks like it’s unlikely to step up and push the mass-hallucination that is Avatar off its perch, due to mathematics, but at this stage there’s also compelling evidence that Black Panther can do… anything.

It’s rare that solo films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are such big box office hits, as opposed to the huge multi-hero franchises like the Avengers films.

Furthermore, it’s a film that inherently tells a tale of black power and pride in a superhero world, following the struggle of King T’Challa and his kingdom of Wakanda and their relationship to the outside world.

It’s also the first superhero film to feature a predominantly black cast, starring Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa the Black Panther, alongside Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett and Forest Whitaker.

All the above reasons could have been obstacles to the films commercial success, meaning that its overwhelming victory over the box office has made fans extremely happy.
