Former Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has caused a stir after saying Prime Minister Scott Morrison needs to be careful not to become a ‘simp’ on ABC’s Insiders this morning.

Former Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has caused a bit of a stir this morning after his appearance on ABC’s Insiders. Answering a question about Morrison’s response to the possible release by the US of a former Afghan soldier who killed Australian soldiers, Shorten unleashed the ‘S’ word.

He said “Mr Morrison needs to make sure he doesn’t look like he’s just a simp to Donald Trump.” When asked by host David Speers to explain ‘simp’, Shorten replies ‘well, soft.”

Some people have assumed that Shorten meant ‘simp’ in the old-fashioned way, of ‘silly’ or ‘foolish’, but that seems at odds with his follow-up explanation that he meant ‘soft’.

Most likely, and most awkwardly, Shorten was probably meaning it in the 2020 way. This either means that he is saying that Scott Morrison is whipped and submissive to Donald Trump, or that he is such a huge fan of Trump that he would roll over and do anything for him.

Either way, people have found it extremely funny and/or so embarrassing that it makes their human skin want to turn completely inside out. It’s not helped by the fact that Shorten has a history of cringe behaviour while attempting to utilise zeitgeisty trends.

It’s hard to say if Shorten thought using simp would be cool, or if it would be just uncool enough to garner a response, but it certainly worked.

Can’t wait to see what is next!

2020 is weird!
