Rejoice! Basement Jaxx Are Going on Tour With A Whole Dang Orchestra

Peanut butter and jam; bread and butter; Basement Jaxx and The Metropolitan Orchestra. Some things just work together.

Basement Jaxx have been pushing the sonic envelope for almost two decades now, ever since their debut record Remedy blew apart the UK electronic scene and inspired a colossal wave of imitators. Since then, they’ve made records with Robyn, forever altered the club and pop scenes with their all-time great banger ‘Red Alert’, and generally pushed electronica in strange, innovative new directions.

Indeed, their upcoming, three-date tour with Australia’s own classical powerhouse The Metropolitan Orchestra is further proof of that wild rebel spirit. Rather than simply tour their impressive back catalogue to clubs around the country, the pair have teamed up with one of the biggest names in contemporary classical music to transform and enhance their already banging tunes.

This isn’t Jaxx’s first dip into the classical scene. Their long love affair with string sections started back in 2011, when they teamed up with the Metropole Orkest to rework their back catalogue, producing the magnificent Basement Jaxx vs. Metropole Orkest in the process.

The upcoming Aussie tour with The Metropolitan Orchestra is designed in that same vein. The shows, which have already toured to enthusiastic response in the UK (the London Standard described it as the best thing Jaxx have put their minds to) will see the two creative forces come together in a series of unmissable gigs, mixing the best of thumping electronica, and sheer, unbridled technical accomplishment.

The Australian tour is set to hit Melbourne’s Margaret Court Arena on Saturday April 13, Sydney’s Opera House on Sunday April 14, and Brisbane’s QPAC on Thursday April 18 (how about those venues, hey?).
