Apple Killed Off The iPod Classic Yesterday And No One Even Noticed

The iPod is dead.

In the excitement of the iPhone 6/iWatch thing announcement yesterday, it almost went unnoticed that Apple’s newly-redesigned website mysteriously lacked any mention of its once-iconic music player. As a result, you can no longer buy an iPod classic on the Apple website or (once stocks run out, presumably) from Apple stores. The beloved plaything of millions is no more.

Its time had to come — the world had moved on to fancier technology and more sophisticated ways of playing music — but did it have to be like this? Did it have to be tossed aside, instead of being given a decent send-off like the wonderful piece of musical empowerment that it was? Was that too much to ask, Apple? Where is your soul?

I still remember my first iPod. I got it in Year Nine, and for a solid month I was in such high demand I had to turn people away. “Sorry, I can’t hear you over the Green Day I’m listening to. On my iPod”.

They were golden times. Now every tween has a device that can run rings around the humble iPod and its little clickwheel, but we who grew up with one clutched in our trembling adolescent paws won’t forget. The Internet sees, Apple! The Internet remembers.

RIP in peace, little iPod.
