10 Things To Do For $1 (Or Less) This Weekend

Turns out, $1 goes further than you think.

Brought to you by Kingsman: The Secret Service

Before the release of 'Kingsman: The Golden Circle', see where it all began and rent 'Kingsman: The Secret Service' for less than $1 until September 28.

Let’s face it, living in Australia can be expensive. Even when you’re being really good (bringing lunch from home, cutting down on nights out) to save up for that house/ holiday/ pair of designer sneakers, if you want to put away some serious money, you have to get extra crafty.

Luckily with just a little bit of digging and a handy gold coin, you can find plenty of excellent activities to do for less than the cost of a bag of red frogs.

So, leave the credit card at home – and check out what you can do in your neck of the woods for $1 or less.

#10 Do Outdoor Yoga

For a gold coin donation you can practice yoga among the paper trees on the bank of South Perth’s Swan River. Community group Perth Yoga for Everybody meets each Sunday morning to salute the sun and feel smug about how not hungover they are.

#9 See Some Cute Animals

Step 1: Ensure your birthday falls on a non-work day this year. Step 2: Celebrate by visiting Sydney’s Taronga Zoo for just one glorious dollar on the day of your birth. You get a Taronga birthday badge to wear and keep as a memento to make sure humans and animals alike know it’s your special day.

#8 Eat Up

Got $100 taste on a single digit budget? Melbourne’s Panama Dining Room has an oyster hour from 6pm-7pm every night. Sydney’s Wild Rover does $1 oysters on Saturdays from 4pm and so does Perth’s Brooklyn Lounge. Even though we’re kind cheating with this one (what are the chances you’ll stop at just one freshly shucked oyster?), it’s still a pretty good bet you’ll only need the coins in your pocket to have a good time.

#7 Take A Wine Tour

You might enjoy drinking it, but how much do you know about how wine is made? Educate yourself with a free guided tour at Adelaide’s National Wine Centre. Once a month the centre also opens its doors for a free Friday night cellar door event, featuring masterclasses hosted by Adelaide winemakers.

#6 Get A Cheap Laugh

Grab your mates for comedy hour from 6pm every Friday night at Brisbane Powerhouse. This one’s free too, so you can take that gold coin straight to the bank.

#5 Go For A Ride

There’s a reason Adelaide won an award for being Australia’s most bike-friendly city. A joint initiative between the City of Adelaide and Bike SA offers those in Adelaide bikes for free daily hire, with a helmet thrown in. Pack a picnic and take yourself on your own city tour.

#4 Take In Some Art

Did you know Tasmanians get free entry to all exhibitions at MONA every single day of the year? Unlike the permanent exhibitions at most galleries, the art at Mona is constantly changing, so it feels like a whole new place each time you visit.

#3 Visit A Second-Hand Bookshop

Forget Amazon. The cheapest deals can still be found at that rare breed of retailer: the independent bookstore. Most, including The Bookshop Darwin, Gertrude & Alice (Sydney) and The Book Grocer (Melbourne) have discount bins guaranteed to have at least a few dirt cheap gems – and guarantee your enjoyment for the rest of the weekend.

#2 Score A Meal Deal

In what could be called a national race to the bottom dollar, you can find a fried, steamed or grilled bar snack for $1 in most Aussie cities. There’s fried chicken ribs at Changz Canteen (Sundays) and arancini at Fitzroy Social (Sundays) in Melbourne, pintxos specials at Pinchos (daily) in Perth, and 50 cent chicken wings at the Toxteth Hotel (Fridays) in Sydney.

#1 Watch Kingsman: The Secret Service

If you’re smart, you spent the better part of this year re-watching all six seasons of Game of Thrones in preparation for the seventh season. But now that that’s over and your schedule is clear, what’s there to do?

Stay in, make your own cut-price popcorn and rent a must-see movie. Before you catch Kingsman: The Golden Circle at the cinemas, go back to where it all began: the first film in the series, Kingsman: The Secret Service.

It stars the thinking woman’s crumpet Colin Firth as a very British secret agent who leads a James Bond-style secret spy organisation called Kingsman. It also features Michael Caine and Samuel L. Jackson, and is a delightfully fun romp through your favourite spy movie tropes, from action-packed fight scenes to futuristic gadgets and witty one-liners – and it’s available to rent now for $1.
