Independent Queensland Senator Fraser Anning has been caught on camera hitting a young protester who egged him at an event in Melbourne this afternoon.

The Senator was in Melbourne to meet Victorian supporters of his newly founded “Conservative National Party”. He was addressing reporters when a teenage boy approached him from behind and smashed an egg on the back of his head.

Anning turned around and hit the boy two times. The teen was then tackled and pinned to the ground by a number of Anning’s supporters.

The incident was captured on video, as the event was being live-streamed on Facebook.

According to 7 News reporter Kristy Mayr who was at the scene, the young man was held by the group until police arrived. Junkee has contacted Victoria Police for comment. The ABC has reported that a 17-year-old was arrested and then released pending further inquiries.

Anning was widely condemned following his reprehensible response to Friday’s Christchurch terror attack in which 49 worshippers at a pair of mosques were killed. The Senator, who has previously attended far-right rallies and called for a “final solution” to Muslim immigration, said the cause of the shooting was “the immigration program which allowed Muslim fanatics to migrate to New Zealand in the first place”.
