If You’re In The Mood To Cry, The Wombats Just Covered ‘Running Up That Hill’ For Like A Version
Do we think Kate Bush would approve?
Indie darlings The Wombats just released a cover of Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill’ for Triple J’s Like A Version, and everyone is freaking out accordingly.
The cover, released on Friday, is a much more pared-back version of the original, which is packed with synth samples and a pounding drum machine.
According to Music Feeds, the band originally wanted to faithfully re-create the Kate Bush hit before deciding to put their own spin on things. “If you’re a bit too close to it, then it sounds just like a worse version of her version,” said drummer Dan Haggis. “Which, when you’re doing a cover, is exactly not what we want to do.”
As you’ve probably heard, Kate Bush’s song from the 1985 album Hounds of Love is experiencing a rebirth of sorts following its inclusion in Season 4 of Stranger Things. The track plays during a scene when the character Max (Sadie Sink), who has been tormented by dark thoughts since the death of her brother the season prior, struggles to break free from Vecna’s villainous grip.
Bush made a rare appearance on UK radio earlier this week to comment on the song’s resurgence, stating she was happy to see it being used on the show in such a positive way. “You know, as a kind of talisman almost for Max …. I think it’s very touching, actually.”
Bush added that she was thankful a new generation was discovering her music. “What’s really wonderful is that this is a whole new audience who — you know, in a lot of cases — they’ve never heard of me. And I love that. And the thought of all these really young people hearing the song for the first time and discovering it.”
