Strap In, Because Steve McQueen’s New Thriller ‘Widows’ Is In Cinemas Now

If you’ve got plans this week, cancel them: you’re going to want to be at the cinema watching Widows instead.

In case you haven’t yet heard about the film that critics are raving about, allow us to get you up to speed. Widows is the latest crime thriller from Oscar-winning director Steve McQueen (who directed 12 Years A Slave). And, if that’s not enough, the film’s written by Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn and it has an absolute powerhouse cast, led by Oscar-winner Viola Davis, Elizabeth Debicki, Michelle Rodriguez, and Cynthia Ervo.

That’s right, it’s a crime thriller led by women, and it’s almost certainly going to be an Oscar contender.

The film centres on four widows with nothing in common except a debt left behind by late husbands’ who led lives of crime – a debt these women need to find a way to pay, fast.

Reviews are calling the film “a swaggering, supercharged crime epic” (The Telegraph UK), “a ferociously entertaining crowd-pleaser” (The Guardian), and “a crackling, pulse-pounding heist movie with a sterling cast” (The Film Stage).

Probably the best indication of how good it’s gonna be is the trailer, though, which is gritty, tense, and almost entirely made up of intelligent, extraordinary women killing it. You can check out the trailer below and see the film in cinemas from today.
