In April last year, Zach Braff announced he was working on a follow-up to everybody’s once-favourite and now-outgrown film, Garden State. The catch? He needed you to fund it, for some reason.

The resultant Kickstarter Campaign launched a thousand think-pieces on whether it was/wasn’t appropriate for a well-known and very rich creative to turn to the public to fund something a studio would have been happy to pay for, and a thousand more think-pieces on whether Garden State should be left well enough alone.

And now, here we are with a trailer.

Set ten years after Garden State, Wish I Was Here stars Zach Braff, Kate Hudson and Mandy Patinkin. Braff plays a thirty-something father who is forced for financial reasons to homeschool his kids — one of whom, played by Joey King, looks so much like Natalie Portman that it’s very tempting to guess at the intervening decade. Except you’re not allowed to do that. As Braff said in his Kickstarter clip, “It’s not a sequel in story, but it’s a continuation of the tone.”

Which is code for: whimsy, The Shins, and yelling into an abyss.

Coming to a Sundance near you, probably.
