Ryan Gosling (ruggedly beautiful star of notable films such as Ryan Gosling Refuses To Eat His Cereal) has written and directed what looks like a bizarre and probably confusing film — and you can now watch the trailer.

The fantasy-thriller centres on a single mother (Christina Hendricks) trying to make her way in a surreal underworld set in future Detroit, while her teenage son gets embroiled in an urban war after discovering a secret underwater town. It also features a pretty stellar supporting cast, including Ben Mendelsohn, Eva Mendes, Saoirse Ronan, and Doctor Who’s Matt Smith.

But described by one critic last year as a “fantastically awful misfire”, Lost River was panned across the board after debuting at Cannes, proving that having a beautiful face and a thing for David Lynch movies doesn’t mean you can direct a masterpiece.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who would see pretty much anything with Gosling’s name on it (and this film is no exception), but Lost River was infamously booed at Cannes, and the criticism is pretty foreboding.

Take Justin Chang at Variety, for instance: “Had Terrence Malick and David Lynch somehow conceived an artistic love-child together, only to see it get kidnapped, strangled and repeatedly kicked in the face by Nicolas Winding Refn, the results might look and sound something like Lost River, a risible slab of Detroit gothic that marks an altogether inauspicious writing-directing debut for Ryan Gosling.”

Ouch.

Though the Australian distribution rights have been bought, there is no release date yet. Crapocalypse or modern masterpiece? You decide.
