Feminist Frequency, the brainchild of gamer and activist Anita Sarkeesian, is primarily known for its ‘Tropes vs. Women in Video Games’ webseries and the epic tantrums that series sparked in big sweaty manbabies all over the Internet. Much of the “criticism” (read: abuse) that Feminist Frequency attracted was due to the fact that Sarkeesian is female, raising the prospect that it wouldn’t have garnered nearly as much hatred had it been fronted by a male host.

Back in April ‘Tropes’ producer Joshua McIntosh wrote an op-ed to that effect over at Polygon. “One of the luxuries of being a member of the dominant group is that the benefits afforded us often remain invisible to us. This blindness allows many men to remain blissfully unaware of what roughly half of all gamers experience on a daily basis,” he wrote.

“We have been taught and socialized not to see it and to think of our own experiences as universal. So when men, even well-meaning men, hear the term ‘male privilege’, it can sometimes be difficult to understand exactly how it relates to our everyday lives.”

A couple of days ago Feminist Frequency released a video that took that idea and ran with it, showcasing 25 male gamers listing off the privileges and benefits that come with being a male gamer, the vast majority of which men don’t even have to think about, let alone be thankful for or question why those benefits aren’t extended to everyone.

Number 25 is exceptional: “Because it was created by a straight white man, this checklist will likely be taken more seriously than if it had been written by virtually any female gamer.”
