The latest season of The Umbrella Academy has landed, revealing how the hit Netflix show has approached the gender affirmation journey of Elliot Page’s main character.

– Spoiler alert for Season 3 of  The Umbrella Academy ahead –

Season 3 introduces Viktor — the powerful Hargreeves sibling formerly known as Vanya, who manages to nearly end the world twice. After finding the love of his life the season prior, Viktor describes the impact Sissy Cooper had on him, revealing she “opened” something inside of him.

In ‘World’s Biggest Ball of Twine’, Viktor learns that Cooper actually died back in 1989, after the Umbrella Academy time-jumped back to the present day off the back of JFK’s assassination, and realises they will never be reunited. He then walks past a barber and gets his long hair cut short, after a flashback from Cooper coos, “you might not even notice the box you’re in, until someone comes along and lets you out”.

The first open discussion with his loved one comes as brothers Klaus, Diego, and Number Five take in his new do, before Viktor unveils how he took matters into his own hands and forged a treaty with the newly introduced and competing superhero siblings, the Sparrow Academy.

“Who elected you, Vanya?” Diego pipes up. “It’s Viktor,” he replies, reintroducing himself to his family. “It’s who I’ve always been. Is that an issue for anyone?”

“Nah, I’m good with it,” replies Diego. “Yeah, me too. Cool!” says Klaus, followed by Number Five telling Viktor that he’s “truly happy” for him, in a sincere, graceful, and supportive conversation.

Later on, Viktor shares his news with sister Allison, who expresses guilt that “she never realised”.

“Well, how would you?” replies Viktor. “You couldn’t have known because, I mean, I didn’t fully. Being with Sissy … [she] showed me I’d never be free hiding from who I really am. And after losing her I realised, I just can’t live in that box any more. I won’t.”

“You know I always hated mirrors, I thought everybody felt so strange in their skin,” he goes on, looking at his reflection ahead of him. “I guess that’s not true, right?” Allison then asks what he sees now, as Viktor smiles and replies: “me, just me”.

“Thank you for trusting me with this,” says Allison. “You’re family, Viktor. Okay? And there’s nothing, nothing that would make me love you less.”

Page came out as trans in December 2020 on Instagram, nearly six months after the release of the show’s second season. The Umbrella Academy publicly backed Page after he gave an interview with Time Magazine about his journey in March this year.

The Umbrella Academy Season 3 is now on Netflix.
