Dreamworks Animation, the company who brought you such family favourites as Antz and Bee Movie (as well as last year’s weirdly successful cave-family flick, The Croods), have once again taken the inspirational maxim “Look to your own backyard” quite literally and pulled a full-length feature straight out of their garden trough of ideas. The company’s new movie, Turbo, is about an ordinary snail who dreams of being fast.

Featuring the instantly recognisable vocal stylings of Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Snoop Dogg and Ken Jeong amongst others, the film follows poor lil’ Turbo (Reynolds), who’s bored and tired of his own suffocatingly sloooooooow surroundings and dreams of becoming an Indianapolis 500 champ like his hero, Guy Gagne (Bill Hader). Fortunately for Turbo, he gets hit by a truck and miraculously lands into some drag racer’s supply of nitrous-oxide, which penetrates his snail-y veins and gives him incredible turbo-boosted secret powers. But enough exposition, let the newly-released trailer (via ComingSoon) paint a proper picture:

Much like that ol’ masterpiece Ratatouille, there’s probably a nice lesson in the film about ignoring the nay-saying doubts of your jealous hometown brood who think your restless curiosity is all annoying and uppity and some other inspirational stuff about following your dreams at all costs, which is a nice and heartwarming change from cinematic silliness like this.

The movie will be in cinemas locally from September 1.
