"Severe weather warnings, gee whiz. I don't know what's going on behind me, Joe."

Tony Armstrong delivered an impromptu weather report on live TV this morning after actual Weatherman Nate Byrne seemingly dropped off the face of the earth.

The usually tight ship that is ABC’s News Breakfast fell into disarray when anchor Joe O’Brien attempted to cross to Byrne’s weather report. Instead, we were treated to a shot of Tony Armstrong spinning away from his desk and minding his own business.

“I think we’ll get to Nate eventually,” a flummoxed O’Brien responded, to which we hear a disembodied Tony yell “Ha! Do you want me to step in?”

“Yeah, maybe we need a bit more Tony, I don’t know,” O’Brien responded, appearing equal parts amused and perturbed.

“Oh, here we go,” Tony eventually said, appearing in front of a map of Australia with both arms extended to his sides in bemused victory.

“Umm, yeah tell us what’s happening today down in Melbourne, Tony.”

“Ah well Melbourne, down here,” Tony said, pointing to Victoria on the map. “Sunny day today, I think we get to a top of 14. Pretty clear, so get your washing done.” Okay, this is actually excellent advice?

The whole thing went south after that though, when Tony apologised to the rest of the country’s inhabitants for not knowing what was going on in their weatherly corner.

But wait, there’s more! Armstrong caught sight of some autocue and was able to report on the rest of the country’s weather, before being swiftly bombarded by a bunch of mysterious graphics — including a quick nod to Canada, for some reason. “Severe weather warnings, gee whiz. I don’t know what’s going on behind me, Joe. I’m doing my best though, I’m doing my best. Vancouver? We’re all over the place.”

Tony then did a little dance before proclaiming, “I’m out”, exiting the shot camera left. As far as we know, News Breakfast‘s Nate Byrne is yet to be located.
