Tom Ballard and the team at Tonightly have a message for Australia’s top politicians: please, for the love of god, stop trying to rap.

In their first episode of 2018, the ABC Comedy show broke down the disturbing new trend of lawmakers spitting mad rhymes. Malcolm Turnbull and Bill Shorten have both tried their hand at hippity hopping in recent months, in what can only be described as a very misguided attempt to win the youth vote. Because youths love the rap music, don’t you know?

But the phenomenon isn’t just deeply cringeworthy. It’s also having a direct impact on the lives of actual hip hop artists, as celebrated Australian rapper Urthboy told Tonightly Investigately reporter Greta Lee Jackson.

“There’s no community consultation,” he said, before labelling the rapping pollies “fuckin’ scabs”.

“I don’t go down to Canberra and just fuckin’ start legislating,” he added.
