Tones and I is one of the biggest pop stars in Australia. That much has been true for the last few months. But now, she’s has achieved worldwide domination, with ‘Dance Monkey’ currently sitting as Spotify’s most-streamed song — it’s the first time an Australian artist has ever taken out the title.

Tones (real name Toni Watson) began her career as a Byron Bay busker before uploading the single ‘Johnny Run Away’ to triple j Unearthed. That song was so well-received that when she released ‘Dance Monkey’ a few months later, she already had something of a reputation. But ‘Dance Monkey’ was the single that changed everything.

An immediate hit, the single has charted in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Tones and I has been locked into a string of high-profile festival dates, been nominated for eight ARIAs and sat at our #1 spot for 11-weeks running, making her the longest-reigning female Australian act to hold the spot.

Now, that success has been certified worldwide: Tones and I has topped the Spotify Global Top 50 with 6million+ streams, making her the first Australian artist in history to do so.

In an interview with Spotify, Watson was somewhat understated about the entire thing. “It was very unexpected,” Watson told the streaming giant, simply. “I’m still getting my head around it. I just try and focus on each day as it comes.”

Can’t put it much better than that. Watch the video for ‘Dance Monkey’ below.
