The Killers Just Unleashed On Trump With A Scathing New Music Video Directed By Spike Lee

American rock band The Killers have unleashed on the policies of Donald Trump with their haunting new single ‘Land of the Free’.
The track features lyrics condemning mass incarceration, school shootings and Trump’s proposed southern border wall. “Down at the border, they’re gonna put up a wall, concrete and rebar steel beams,” sings frontman Brandon Flowers. “High enough to keep all those filthy hands off of our hopes and our dreams. People who just want the same things we do. In the land of the free.”
The accompanying music video was shot by outspoken Trump critic Spike Lee at the US-Mexico border, and features footage of migrants being tear-gassed by US border patrol agents.
‘Land of the Free’ is the first new music from the band since their 2017 album Wonderful Wonderful. In an Instagram post on Tuesday morning, Flowers said he began to “mentally assemble” the song after the Sandy Hook massacre in 2012, and was further driven by subsequent mass shootings and “too many examples of racial injustice to ignore”.
“We dishonour our values, our ancestors and our heritage when we tear gas our brothers and sisters seeking asylum,” Flowers wrote. “I see my family in the faces of those vulnerable people. After all, it wasn’t that long ago that my grandmother and her family immigrated from Lithuania to escape the USSR’s oppression.”
“I love my country. I know these are complicated issues but whether you stand on the left, right, or straddle the line, you’ve gotta believe that we can do better.”
