It’s been three years since The Chats released ‘Smoko’, their signature song, and permanently changed the culture.

Oh, and changed The Chats. Almost overnight, the band went from being a small outfit uploading songs to triple j Unearthed to music titans, touring with Dave Grohl and racking up millions of views on YouTube. They’re one of our most popular musical exports these days, a group that does our fair isle proud.

Indeed, so significant are the group’s ripples that they have even made their mark on the British and American musical culture. Remember when California crooner Miguel shouted the band out on his Instagram stories? Well now cutting edge ska/indie-rock icon Yungblud has similarly honoured the group, this time through a cover of their most famous song.

Titled ‘Weird x Smoko’, the cover combines The Chats with one of Yungblud’s own songs. And lemme tell ya, it’s a total trip.

In a conversation between Eamon Sandwith of The Chats and Yungblud, the latter artist says that he wants to make the Australian band proud with his take on their song. And you know what? I think he’s done just that.
